Jacksonville, FL – A woman and her daughter got the scare of their lives during a quick stop at a convenience store. Pat Wells waited in her running car while her daughter went inside for a few items. Wells noticed a man panhandling in the parking lot nearby, but she didn’t think anything of it.
“The next thing I knew, he was in my car. He just jumped in,” Wells said.
The man told Wells that he just needed a ride and grabbed the gear shifter. The startled Wells started honking her horn to draw attention to her situation. Wells’ daughter, Tracy Hancock, heard the honking and went outside to see what her mother wanted.
Once in the parking lot, she saw her mother locked in the car. “I’m like, ‘Oh my god!’” Hancock said. “What’s going to happen? It could be the last time I ever see her,’” she said.

While Wells wasn’t armed with any vehicle security items, she was armed with common sense.
Wells struggled with the thief, but he was able to get her car in gear and speed off with her still inside. She said the man was driving dangerously and kept going despite her physical attempts to get him to stop. Finally, she promised him $40 to stop the car and get out, which he agreed to do.
Wells kept her wits about her and managed to escape the attempted carjacking with minor cuts and bruises – and her car! Both Wells and her daughter said this harrowing incident taught them very valuable lesson.
“No matter who's in the car, don't leave keys in the car and don’t leave it running because you never know,” Wells said.
