Jacksonville, FL – A woman and her daughter got the scare of their lives during a quick stop at a convenience store.  Pat Wells waited in her running car while her daughter went inside for a few items.  Wells noticed a man panhandling in the parking lot nearby, but she didn’t think anything of it.

“The next thing I knew, he was in my car.  He just jumped in,” Wells said.

The man told Wells that he just needed a ride and grabbed the gear shifter.  The startled Wells started honking her horn to draw attention to her situation.  Wells’ daughter, Tracy Hancock, heard the honking and went outside to see what her mother wanted.

Once in the parking lot, she saw her mother locked in the car.  “I’m like, ‘Oh my god!’” Hancock said.  “What’s going to happen?  It could be the last time I ever see her,’” she said.

Wells was the victim of a carjacking in broad daylight.  Carjackings like this one are a startling reminder about the importance of vehicle security.  A car was stolen every 25 seconds in 2004, causing over $8 billion in losses to car owners and insurance companies.  Take steps to secure your vehicle from intrusion and theft – from the open road to the garage.

A  Skylink Vibration Sensor is an effective way to add security to your vehicle.  This device detects movement or vibration and sends a signal to a control panel or emergency dialer.  By placing a Skylink Vibration Sensor in your vehicle, you will be immediately alerted if any unauthorized drivers move your car.

For advanced vehicle security under thirty dollars, try an Ademco Wireless Key.  This easy-to-use safety tool allows vehicle owners to control their security system, lights, garage doors, and more at the touch of a button.  This portable vehicle security device is also equipped with a panic button designed to draw lots of attention during emergency situations.

While Wells wasn’t armed with any vehicle security items, she was armed with common sense.

Wells struggled with the thief, but he was able to get her car in gear and speed off with her still inside.  She said the man was driving dangerously and kept going despite her physical attempts to get him to stop.  Finally, she promised him $40 to stop the car and get out, which he agreed to do.

Wells kept her wits about her and managed to escape the attempted carjacking with minor cuts and bruises – and her car!  Both Wells and her daughter said this harrowing incident taught them very valuable lesson.

“No matter who's in the car, don't leave keys in the car and don’t leave it running because you never know,” Wells said.

Wells’ story proves that in addition to security devices, common sense provides a great defense against potential criminal activity.  Here are some other important practical vehicle safety tips:

  • Completely close windows – professional thieves can unlock cars through even a slight opening.
  • Avoid leaving a vehicle in an unattended public parking lot for an extended period of time – a car is five times more likely to be stolen from an unattended lot than from the street or an attended lot.
  • Do not leave valuables inside your vehicle, even if your car is locked – take them with you or keep them locked in the trunk.
  • Carry your vehicle’s registration and insurance card with you – don’t leave them in your car.
