If you have a young child it is important to make sure that your household is childproofed.  Read through these tips to safeguard your young one from any possible safety hazards.

Kids are very curious and courageous creatures.  They constantly explore, touch, taste, and swallow whatever and whenever they can.  That is why it is extremely important to make sure your home is properly set up so your home can be safe for your children.  Here are some tips for childproofing your home.

Electrical outlets are one of the most dangerous things for a child for obvious reasons, the kid can shock himself.  You can buy very cheap covers for the electrical outlets that would stick right into the outlets.  These are okay to use, but it would be wise to still keep the child away from them or stick large furniture in front of the outlets as well.

Sticking with the danger of electrical shock theme, it is important to keep cords hidden away from children.  Aside from the danger of shock, the child can get tangled in the cord and choke him or herself.  They also like to pull and tug at cords and are at risk for falling objects.  Just make sure they are secure and let your child know it is wrong to play with them.

Keep plants out of reach of children.  Some plants can be poisonous or hazardous to their health if chewed and swallowed.

The stairs should be closed off by baby gates.  Make sure the baby gates are secure, kids figure things out pretty quickly, especially if they are not secure.

Use safety latches and locks on all doors and drawers.  This is must for childproofing your home because your child may get into the cleaning products or the knife drawer and harm him or herself.

You also want to make sure your child will not be able to burn him or herself from faucets or shower heads or anything that will burn them for that matter.  Set your water heater to 120 degrees.  At 140 degrees it only takes three seconds for your child to get a third-degree burn.  Lighters, matches, and stove tops must be watched as well.

Check your heavy furniture like bookshelves and televisions and make sure they are secured.  If your house is not childproofed, these items can be pulled down by the child and hurt them by landing on them.

Childproofing your home should be an absolute priority.  Do not take these tips lightly.  Your kid’s safety depends on them.  Do some research on this topic for other possible safety hazards and get your house childproofed as soon as you can.
