Fire resistant safes are not enough to protect your valuable documents or data.  You are going to want to upgrade to a fireproof safe if you want better protection from a fire.

House fires affect millions of people across the nation each year.  While it is very important to learn to prevent fires, sometimes accidents or Mother Nature just happens. Unfortunately, even if we have executed a perfect escape plan, sometimes we just can't save our valuable possessions, documents, and other properties from fire.  Purchasing a fireproof safe would actually save those valuable possessions from the fire.

Most standard safes are built with fire resistant features.  This does not mean that they are fireproof.  Resistant and proof are two words that have two totally different meanings.  Fire resistant means that the safes can withstand the fire to a certain degree.  Once that degree hits, poof, the safe goes up with the blaze.  Fireproof safes however are built to withstand much more heat than the fire resistant safes.  These safes are specifically built to keep data on disks safe.

All fireproof safes are tested to make sure they can withstand the extreme temperatures of a house fire.  The tests heat the safes to 1550 degrees Fahrenheit for an hour and a half, then they drop the safes 30 feet and heat them up all over again.  The fireproof safes are rated as follows:  A class-c resistant safe will protect paper from a 1700 degree fire for one hour, class-b for two hours, and class-a for four hours at 2,000 degrees.

The price you pay will be dependent on what you want to protect and the class of protection you would be interested in.  The smallest fireproof safes start at about $50.  There is only a few hundred cubic inches of space and they weigh less than 20 pounds.  The bigger fireproof safes will be more expensive and start at around $200 and run into the thousands of dollars for some.  The more expensive ones are suited for commercial use or to hold guns and/or ammunition.

There are plenty of places you can go online that sell fireproof safes.  Internet buying is a growing trend and you can find many fireproof safes listed at wholesale prices.  The only drawback is that you are going to have to pay shipping fees which could be quite hefty for the heavier fireproof safes.

Before you order your safe online, make sure you see it in person at a local store to see if it suits your needs.  If it ends up not being something you want, it will cost a pretty penny to send it back.  The best places to shop for the fireproof safes would be your local home security stores.
