When you travel there are many things to consider, especially when it comes to security. Whether you are a seasoned traveler or first timer, security should always be on your mind and from all accounts that is exactly what's on the mind of the American traveler. In one recent survey travelers cited theft (37%) over terrorism (27%) as the biggest potential risk.
When traveling by airplane, you need to be especially cautious of theft. Your luggage should be with you at all times, even if you stop at a restaurant or use the bathroom. Also, don't bother with expensive luggage that only attracts a thief. If you use cheap, inexpensive looking luggage a thief likely will overlook it. Once off the plane hurry, you want to beat the luggage to the carousel so you can pick up your luggage as quickly as possible.
Then there are the laptops! In a paid study sponsored by Dell a report claims that over 10,000 laptops are lost or stolen every week at US airports. Recovery rates are very low, evidently because most people don't even try. So how do you avoid it? Of course keep your laptop with you at all times. At the airport security checkpoint place your laptop in the first bin with the laptop bag next to it. In the next bin put your shoes, belt, ect. Then put your carry-on bag last. Once on the other side of the checkpoint immediately put your laptop in its bag and keep it by your side. Also, mark your laptop with a sticker, that way you can quickly identify it. And if you lose your laptop then take action, call the TSA and the airport.
Not only should you be concerned about safety at the airport or on the plane, but once you reach your destination as well. Someone on vacation is often an easy mark. First, it's a good idea to keep your money hidden and not put it where you normally would keep it. One idea is to use a money belt. You can buy money belts on-line and in some department stores. I found one for $12.00. If you are women, you can sew pockets into your bra and keep some folded cash. Muggers aren't usually interested in your bra.
