With the advent of wireless security systems it makes sense for a renter to buy and use a wireless system to help keep their family and belongings safe.  Before wireless, renters (if they were allowed) would hardwire the alarms by drilling into walls.   Many landlords weren't happy about the modifications to the apartment or house, nor were renters happy about investing in a home security system that they would have to leave behind once they moved out.

A wireless alarm system comes as a kit and will include at the minimum, a control panel with key pad and siren, two sensors, and a motion detector.  Cameras can also be added to some wireless systems.  This gives you additional surveillance, which in turn means additional safety.  The transition of video information from the cameras goes through a wireless signal which can identify people coming and going..

Here's how a wireless security system works.  The system sends signals to the control panel through radio frequency signals.  Some systems have been designed to use infrared beams, as well. When the system is armed, the detectors monitor the surrounding area for motion and sends the signal to the control panel, which then prompts a siren to sound if something is detected.

Wireless security systems have some advantages over wired systems.  First, they are very economical.  You can buy a wireless system starting at just under $100.  Second, the wireless security systems are simple and don't involve any electrical wiring or other installation challenges.  That's why wireless is easy to do-it-yourself and it's a good choice for renters.

In addition to a wireless security system, there are other ways to make sure your apartment or house is secure.  Have your locks changed when you move in.  If apartment management does not pay for this then spend the money yourself.  Next, keep your doors and windows locked.  Make sure the locks that are in place are effective.  Often door handles on sliding doors that lead to the balcony are flimsy and easy to break.  It's also a good idea to get to know your neighbors.  This will help you identify who lives there and who is a potential thief.  Finally, there is renter's insurance that will help you recover what you have lost in the case that your apartment is broken into.  When it comes to property insurance, how much the premium is depends on the value of the belongings reported by the renter.  For a renter, the average apartment or house for an entire year's coverage is less than $100. And that would be money well spent.

Staying secure is your responsibility.  In most cases apartment management will provide security for the grounds.  There may be gated entries and exits, lights, and sometimes a private security company patrolling the grounds.  But for the most part, it's up to the renter to make sure his apartment and family are safe.

Overall, a wireless security system gives renters the flexibility they need to overcome obstacles like brick walls and cement floors.  That means no drilling holes, no special tools, and no wires to run.  This will preserve your home's beauty and your safety.
